When does a tourbillon act like a tourbillon?  When it is vertical.  When a watch's balance is horizontal to the Earth's surface, the effects of gravity are equivalent on all parts of its surface and therefore no distortions in timekeeping are produced.  But since we know that watches do not remain in the horizontal position all the time, tourbillons are added as a means of correcting for the gravitational effects that impact a balance that is vertical.  This comes to the question: when is a balance or a tourbillon in a vertical position? According to our research, the physical and mechanical properties of verticalness appear once the balance is at a 30° angle or more to horizontal.  This means that even relatively small variations in angle case the tourbillon's corrective effects to become relevant.  But a horizontally positioned tourbillon still has a wide range of use during which it is "horizontal".  To increase the percentage of time in which the tourbillon actually performs its intended function, the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical has a vertical tourbillon.  When you think about the positions of tourbillon throughout a day of normal use, and even in storage, a tourbillon positioned vertically in the movement will be "vertical" a much greater portion of the time and thus be more relevant in terms of its corrective effects on the accuracy of the movement.  

The chain and fusée is another important element in technical prowess of the Cabestan. A chain and fusée, with its automatic system of conical gears, enables the watchmaker to deliver a constant force to the movement.  The fusée corrects for the decreasing torque in the mainspring.  Since this decrease is not linear over time, the fusée is curved to perfectly compensate for the torque curve of the mainspring.  As a result, the tourbillon receives a constant force and the variations in amplitude are dramatically reduced, thus increasing dramatically the accuracy of the movement. With the vertical tourbillon and the chain and fusée working closely together, amazing precision of  ± 1 second per day can be attained.

The Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical featuring a vertical tourbillon coupled with the chain and fusée is not only technically advanced but aesthetically enchanting. Its creator, Jean-François Ruchonnet, who was fascinated by the simple ingenuity of the capstan – a mechanical device characteristic of sailboats comprised of a large drum which is hand-operated with a lever, the winch, causing a rope or chain to wrap around the drum when raising the sail or lifting the anchor –  invented a system to rewind a watch movement and to set the time using a miniature winch which is elegantly hidden in the deployant buckle of the watch strap.

Intrigued by the vertical tourbillon and the possibilities offered by displaying time on cylinders,  Jean-François Ruchonnet had the inspiration to design the entire movement vertically.  The wheels, drums, bridges, tourbillon and chain all astonishingly visible underneath the twin thermo-formed crystals that give this exceptional timepiece its retro-futuristic allure.

How to Attract Women with Your Wardrobe?

These days more so than ever before, men are defined by their fashion sense. While older generations of men may have had their own fashionable styles and eras, there is no time better than now to express yourself through what you wear. All of this said, making yourself attractive to women is not a difficult thing to do. At the Blancpain Central Boutique which was turned into a temporary seminar room, collectors, connoisseurs and watch-lovers arrived in good spirit and quickly engaged themselves into a series of interactive discussions. The workshop was commenced by a welcoming remark by Ms Sincere Chiu, Vice President of Blancpain Hong Kong, followed by an exciting announcement by Mr. Alain Delamuraz on the opening of the Blancpain Boutique at The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai and the Blancpain Boutique at Taipei 101 in Taiwan. Mr. Jeffrey Kingston and Mr. Alain Delamuraz then joined hands to introduce to the audience Blancpain's creations concerning the hearts of timepieces in the past 3 years. By going through "the parade of movements" and the new launches of the year, including the Complete Calendar Carrousel Répétition Minutes Le Brassus, L-evolution Carrousel Saphir, Villeret Complete Calendar 8 Jours and Fifty Fathoms Complete Calendar Flyback Chronograph, Mr. Kingston pointed out that Blancpain's timepieces, which emphasize both inner beauty and external design, are outstanding icons of Haute Horology.

Mr. Kingston described the brand as "A Foundation of Complications": "Blancpain entered 2010 with an industry leading portfolio of in-house complications including the new timepieces on display in this boutique that were featured during this year's Baselworld. At the top of the pyramid there are two special timepieces showcasing Blancpain's flying one minute carrousel. The first is a new grand complication, the Le Brassus Carrousel Répétition Minute; second the Carrousel Saphir, with its movement plates and bridges fashioned in sapphire. Next in line, there is the unveiling of an entirely new Villeret Collection, led by a signature Blancpain complication, the complete calendar moon phase, for the first time offered with a full fired enamel dial. Some master watchmakers and watch critics who have seen it comment that it is just as important as the invention of the tourbillion. Rudis Sylva is proud to announce the birth of The Harmonious Oscillator, the groundbreaking horological innovation that offers far better accuracy than conventional tourbillons or carrousels.  

Featuring a system with two mechanically interlinked balances driven by a single escapement, The Harmonious Oscillator goes against watchmaking theories, which have always ruled out stress on the balances. With its innovative technicality, this design can boast a more accurate setting capacity than a conventional tourbillon, thanks in particular to the asymmetric deployment of the balance springs in all positions, hence the name "Harmonious Oscillator". This world first with two toothed balances exhibits a resonance effect from the first oscillations. 

Developed by watchmaker Mika Rissanen, The Harmonious Oscillator features the following technical specifications: 

  • Two complete toothed balances are interlinked. This combination ensures the same amplitude. The symmetry and energy of the balance springs are constantly opposed, enabling instantaneous average correction in the vertical position, which eliminates the effects of gravity.
  • Frequency: 21,600 vibrations/hour (3 Hz).
  • The cage turns 360 degrees in 60 seconds.
  • Cage diameter: 17.40 mm.
  • 2 flat balance springs, asymmetric deployment.
  • 2 specifically shaped toothed balances made from special material.
  • 1 escapement with 1 lever positioned at 90 degrees.
  • Manual winding mechanism.
  • Power reserve: around 50 hours.
 

While a tourbillon requires a minute to compensate for the effects of gravity, The Harmonious Oscillator enables instantaneous time correction in a vertical position by means of the interconnection of the balances and asymmetric deployment of the balance springs, thus is able to offer far better accuracy than conventional tourbillons or carrousels. This mechanism is close to perfection in terms of setting. Tests performed on various measuring instruments give exceptional results, in particular with regard to amplitude in all positions, or after 24 hours in a vertical position. The amplitude deltas (difference in degrees of amplitude when changing positions) measured on the timing machine are also excellent.  

Apart from technical excellence, the movement features exceptional aesthetics as it is designed, built, machined and then decorated by extreme craftsmanship. The bevelling and dashed lines are done entirely by hand, featuring exceptional precision that cannot be produced by machinery. This finish consists of eliminating the edges between the surface and flanks of the piece, forming a 45 degree chamfer (bezel) which will then be polished. The regulator cage bridge has an innovative and extremely complicated decoration. The piece has a black-coloured 45 degree bevel, giving this highly visible bridge clear proof of the perfection of the work undertaken by the Rudis Sylva brand. 

On the hour and minute indicating dial, which is hand guilloche with tapering trapezoids, the hour and minute are clearly displayed by two fir tree shaped hands. The plate under the regulator is adorned with a "Clous de Paris" decoration with very fine hand guilloche work, thereby bringing out the richness of the regulating part. An innovative large date developed completely in-house adorns the dial with one of the most practical functions that a watch can carry.  

The gold or platinum case back is adorned with an enamelled and hand engraved sun dial. This dial is a reproduction of that adorning the wall of the "Les Rosées" farm, in the village of Les Bois, formerly known as Rudis Sylva. This magnificent structure is one of the most beautiful representatives of the era of the farmer watchmakers, dating from 1750, which subtly points to the historical origin of the brand.

If your cap is missing this, it is probably an imitation.

H&M OPENS THE FIRST STORE IN TURKEY

H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB has signed a contract to open its first store in Turkey. The store is in the best location in Forum Istanbul, one of the largest shopping centres in Turkey.
